| THE WINERY | |
 |
Port is a Portuguese vin doux naturel which has been produced in the Douro valley since the 15th century. In the 18th century, a regulation was already implemented to guarantee the quality of this alcohol.
Since the 17th century, England is one of the biggest consumers of Portuguese wine. As the English people were deeply interested in this fruity wine, they started to play a significant part as owners of Port firms.
In 1750, Henry Burmester began shipping port wine to the British Isle and the rest of Europe. At his death, Frederick Burmester, one of his 12 siblings, became “Treasurer” of the Factory House in Porto. He was compelled to leave Portugal after the invasion by Napoleon’s troops. Johann Wilhelm Burmester, a distant relative from Hamburg, was asked to run the port wine. The generations who have followed have successfully maintained the name of “Burmester” as an international reference of the higher quality.
[a]After having been produced according to the traditional method of food treading in classic stone “lagares”, Burmester Port Wine ages in [g]oak barrels in the cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia to preserve its deep colour and fresh fruit flavours.
