Angostura is not only the name of a rum with a golden-amber hue and sweet aromas produced by one of the biggest Caribbean distilleries but it is also the forward name of Cuidad Bolivar, the capital of Venezuela. Once again, History meets history.
Johann Benjamin Siegert, a Prussian military doctor, joined Simon Bolivar’s army in 1820. Looking after soldiers ill with sever fevers and internal stomach disorders, he created the famous Angostura Aromatic Bitter used to stimulate the appetite and digestion in 1824. Once peace was established, his famous remedy, now used in exotic concoctions (mojito), encouraged Dr. Siegert to establish his own company.
In 1875, looking for a political stability, the House of Angostura chose the nearby island of Trinidad as its country of adoption. It started selling rum at the beginning of the 20th century and installed its own distillery in 1945.
This rum is made from a blend of light and heavy molasses-based rums aged for a minimum of 8 years in bourbon barrels. It possesses a complex bouquet with aromas of cocoa and caramel followed with generous and sweet flavours and a warm and long-lasting finish. It owes its name to the discovery of casks dating from 1919 but only found in 1932 as a fire destroyed a duty-free storehouse belonging to the government.
