Considered as the «finest rum in the world» in the United States, Matusalem Rum was born in Santiago in 1872. During the Spanish-American war for Cuba’s independence, two brothers of Spanish origin, Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, created their own distillery.
To distinguish themselves from other Cuban rums, they improved the distillation and aging methods. After distillation, rums were selected and classified before aging in bourbon oak barrels. They also adapted the Solera blending process used to produce Europe’s finest sherries. Blending various mature aged Caribbean rums makes the youngest cuvées progressively acquire the qualities of the oldest ones and create exceptionally mellow and unique blends.
Having achieved a great success up until the Castro revolution, Ron Matusalem has made its come back in the nineties with Claudio Alvarez, the fifth generation.
Ron Matusalem is now produced in the Dominican Republic whose climate and soils are more appropriate for sugar cane. The same exacting standards set out by the brand’s founders more than 130 years ago are applied today by their descendants in order to produce rums with an exceptional bouquet of delicate flavours. No additives are used to produce Matusalem Rums and a charcoal filtration gives an exquisite smoothness to the rum.
