| THE WINERY  | |
|
One of the best references in Crozes-Hermitages AOC, the Domaine Combier, created in 1963, is located in the south of Crozes, near the Isère river (Rhone Valley). This family estate comprises 34 ha and mainly produces red wines (18 ha). Laurent Combier, a small producer who has made respect for the environment his top priority, has worked all his land organically since 1970. No chemical or synthetic fertilizers!
Syrah, Marsanne and Roussanne are planted on granite and warm clay-sand soils. Yields range from 18 to 42 hl/ha according to the cuvées and the average age of the vines is around 35.
Combining tradition and modern practices, harvests are done by hand in selected pickings called “tris” in order to select only the ripest grapes. Wines age during 12 months in oak barrels that have previously seen one to three wines. These wines are subtleand slowly reveal layer upon layer of sweet fruit, velvety tannins, freshness and acidity. They also have shown consistent quality over the last years and age very well.
