THE WINERY
The origin of the name “Vieux Lazaret” dates back to the 18th century when the Lazarists, a silent order of monks founded by St Vincent de Paul built a hospice in the centre of the village Châteauneuf-du-Pape to look after the needy and the sick. Subsequently, the Lazaret was abandoned. The Quiot family bought it during the 19th century and the buildings became the main centre of the agricultural activities of Vignobles Jérôme Quiot.
On all labels of Domaine du Vieux Lazaret you can see a listed thirteenth century castle which is now part of the Quiot property. This castle called “Tour de Lhers » was used to cross the Rhône River when paying a tax.
Two appellations are produced in this family estate: Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Ventoux. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are among the greatest plots of the region and have belonged to the Quiot family for several generations whereas the Côtes du Ventoux vineyards were taken over in 1880.
Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Roussanne are the white grape varieties used for Domaine du Vieux Lazaret. AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape are mostly produced with Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault (red grape varieties).
