Alexandre de Gasq, Seigneur de Léoville, became the owner of the largest wine estate in the Médoc through his wife. One of his two heirs, the sister of the Marquis de Las Cases, gave her share to her daughter, the wife of the Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré, in 1836.
Léoville Poyferré wines, 2ème Grand Cru Classé, have a strong personality thanks to ideal climatic and geographical conditions for cultivating vines and producing fine wines. One of the best terroirs of the appellation, the vineyard’s soil is composed of glacial gravels on the summits and slopes and various alluvial soils in the hollows.
Château Léoville Poyferré was purchased by the Cuvelier family in 1920 and the 80ha-vineyard has been run by Didier Cuvelier since 1979. Thanks to a long renovation programme, a barrel cellar and two new vatrooms were built. They even replanted with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon. Since this innovation, quality has truly been in the ascendant and Château Léoville Poyferré may become a serious threat to the Barton-Las-Cases domination of the old Léoville estate as well as of Saint-Julien.
