Château Léoville-Barton, 2ème Grand Cru Classé, owes its name to a man of Irish descent, Hugh Barton, who purchased some plots of the Léoville estate in 1826. The property still belongs to the Barton family who is also involved in wine trade. The 45 ha vineyards enjoy a unique terroir of gravelly soils over deeper clay in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation. A significant proportion of old vines has an important influence on quality.
The smallest Léoville estate, Château Léoville-Barton is one of the best Saint-Julien wines. Its strong personality is partly due to an unusual Cabernet-domination (72%).
