Classified as the first of the First Growth thanks to the high quality of its wines, Château Lafite Rothschild is the most famous Bordeaux estate. Its name “Lafite” comes from the Gascon language term “la hite”, which means hillock.
In the 17th century, Lafite began to earn its reputation as a great winemaking estate in France. Alexandre de Ségur married the heiress of Chateau Latour in 1695. Both estates shared a short common history with their son nicknamed “The Wine Prince”. The Marquis de Ségur consolidated Lafite’s successes in foreign markets and the Versailles Court, where it became ”the King’s Wine”.
Lafite passed from owner to owner until Baron James de Rothschild purchased its 74 hectares of vineyards in 1868. Wars and crises made Chateau Lafite Rothschild suffered but research for excellence has been surviving. The estate now amounts to 103 hectares of vines planted on gravel soils which are well-drained and well-exposed.
At Lafite, tradition and technical improvement go hand in hand so that each vintage of Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Carruades de Lafite reveal its great and elegant personality.
