THE WINERY
Named “La Mothe de Margaux” in the past, when there was no vines, the estate started to resemble what it is today in the 16th century. By the end of the 17th century, Château Margaux covered 265 hectares, a third of which was devoted to vine-growing, as it is the case today. Thanks to the claret’s reputation in England and in the Netherlands, the history Château Margaux was already written.
The château of neo-palladian style and ofthen called ” le Versailles du Médoc” as well as the cellars were built in 1810 by the Marquis de la Colonilla who commissioned the Bordeaux architect, Louis Combe.
After having passed from owner to owner following the “ups and downs” of history, the estate now belongs to several competent professionals and directed by a woman, Corinne Mentzelopoulos. With the careful contributions of all of them, Château Margaux remains the first among the four 1ers Crus Classés.
One of the greatest wine, Château Margaux is undeniably at the peak of refinement and elegance.
