Château Palmer owes its name to General Charles Palmer, a wealthy man well-introduced into the English aristocracys who acquired Château de Gascq and its 82 hectares of vines in 1816. He devoted a great deal of time, energy and money to developing his property and promoting his wine at the English court where it was much sought after. Living an increasingly ruinous lifestyle, he was obliged to sell his magnificent estate in 1843 which was purchased by the Péreire banking family in 1853.
The château was built in 1856 by the Péreire brothers. The Péreire family was forced to sell the estate in 1938 to the Mähler family, who originaly came from the Netherlands, and to the German Sichel family; both of them were deeply involved int the wine trade.
Still the property of the descendants of the Sichel and Mähler families, Château Palmer overlooks gravelly rises which give the finesse, the elegance and the concentration of the greatest wines of Margaux. Château Palmer’s aromatic richness with its notes of fruit, spices and flowers and its subtle balance between powerful, but understated tannins make Palmer a Third Growth but Palmer is widely recognised as among the very greatest wines of Bordeaux.
An equal amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Petit Verdot and the minutious know-how of the wine-maker have produced two excellent wines since 1998. Palmer and Alter Ego both reflect Château Palmer’s terroir but with a different interpretation. Alter Ego can be appreciated within the first few years of bottling and is intensely fruity, supple and well rounded whereas Château Palmer has an elegant balance, a wonderful complexity with intense aromatic length.
