Château Sociando Mallet is located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, just north of the village of Saint-Estèphe in the Haut Médoc. It owes its name to two people: “Sociando” is the name of the oldest known owner (1633) whereas “Mallet” is the name of a widow who purchased the estate in 1850.
The place and its only 5 remaining hectares needed to be greatly restructured when Jean Gautreau bought them in 1969. Thanks to his love for Château Sociando Mallet, there are now 75 ha of Cabernet and Merlot planted on a great gravel hillock with a subsoil of limestone and clay. Château Sociando Mallet is now equal to the best Médoc Crus Classés and is often mentionned as an example to prove the necessity to modify the Médoc Classification of 1855.
On a gentle slope looking down onto the Gironde, vines are planted in rows very close to each other to obtain grapes of a better quality. Jean Gautreau’s aim is to reveal a true expression of his terroir. Sociando Mallet, a rich, powerful and well-structured wine with a good aging potential, is made from the oldest vines whereas the second wine, “La Demoiselle de Mallet” is produced with the youngest vines.
