Château Cantemerle is a vestige of our Middle Ages when it was part of the line of fortifications that defended the banks of the Médoc region. The history of the Lords of Cantermerle is related in manuscripts dating to the 12th century, period of the crusades. During the following centuries, the château has belonged to several families before being dismantled during the French Revolution. The château of Sauves was then renamed château Cantemerle.
As early as the 16th centuy, wine became the main industry of the lands of Cantemerle. In the figth agains powdery mildew, the first attemps to control it by dusting the vines with sulphur were carried out at the château of Cantemerle. In 1855, château Cantemerle was classed as fifth growth.
The Cantemerle soil is of top quality with a mixture of silica and gravel. Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot are planted on 90 ha. Grapes are sorted out by hand and each separate plot is fermented separately in large oak vats.
Old or young, the “Cantemerle” are wines whose discovery is like a treasure hunt at which only adults can take part.
